HUACAYA ALPACA

The ALPACA (Vicugna pacos) is a domesticated species of South American camelid.

Alpaca are kept in herds that graze on the level heights of the Andes of Ecuador, southern Peru, northern Bolivia and northern Chile.

Alpaca were not bred to be beasts of burden but specifically for their fiber.

Alpacas have been domesticated for thousands of years. Alpacas are social herd animals that live in family groups consisting of a territorial alpha male, females and their young.

They are gentle, inquisitive, intelligent and observant.

As a prey animal they are cautious and nervous if threatened. Alpacas make a variety of sounds, generally humming as a sign of content, to signal friendly or submissive behavior, alpacas “cluck,” or “click”, and when threatened they make sharp, noisy inhalations that sound like a high pitch burro bray.
